The flea life cycle is comprised of four developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult flea. The time it takes for a new flea to develop can vary from as little as 12 days to as long as 325 days. As flea pupae can remain dormant in the environment for up to 6 months, it may take some time for flea eggs to emerge as adult fleas.
Adult fleas, the life cycle stage you see on the pet, make up just 5% of the total flea population. Ninety-five percent of the population is made up of eggs, larvae and pupae, which can be found in the pet’s environment.
Flea treatment of all household pets is a year round commitment because fleas can be active in all seasons. When a pet goes outside of the home environment, it can come into contact with fleas from eggs that have been deposited by untreated pets or wildlife.
